You only have to wait till April to get Final Fantasy XI's third expansion.

Square Enix sure has made the most of Final Fantasy XI. Even after the PS2 HDD completely flopped, Square refocused things to attack the PC market. It helps that FFXI was conceived from the start to be a cross-platform massively multiplayer online role-playing game, and it does work beautifully.

The inclusion of the Xbox 360 version launching in late April is a third distinct platform that the game runs on, and the best part is that at first glance playing online with someone, you'd never know what platform they're running the game on. It's that seamless, and it's a testament to the flexibility and programming chops of the Japanese uberdeveloper.

When FFXI for the 360 does hit in April, it'll bring with it the third expansion for the series, Treasures of Aht Urgan. Like the PS2 version when it shipped here in the US with the Rise of the Zilart, the 360 version will include all three expansions as part of the package. The second expansion Chains of Promathia, Hit in late 2004.

Aht Urgan adds two new jobs classes, Blue Mage and Corsair, as well as a new set of beastmen, the Mamool Ja. A major fixture of the new Aht Urgan lands that the expansion will introduce, the Mamool Ja Savagelands stand as the primary beastman counterpoint to the peaceful Near Eastern Aht Urgan Empire. More monsters, and a very nebulous "system enhancements" bullet point were included in the official release from Square.

If you own the PC or PS2 versions of the game, Aht Urgan will run you about $30 or so. Newcomers will likely find themselves a full retail package with everything included at some point, but the 360 version is your best bet if you want to get in on April 18th when the game hits the US, or April 20th in Japan and Europe. Regardless of platform, Square will dock your bank account or credit card $13 every month for continued play.
