The Final Fantasy series is friggin' popular, that much should be obvious. Much to the chagrin of the console RPG-hating PC masses, the series not only sells well here, but everywhere else in the world to the tune of a mind-boggling 48 million copies of the entire run.

The news comes on the heels of the latest numbers from Square Enix concerning the U.S. sales of Final Fantasy X-2, the series' first proper sequel, and a game that's already hit a cool million copies sold, bringing the worldwide total sales for Final Fantasy X and the aforementioned sequel to a nice, round 10 million units, almost a full 21% of the series entire fun. Apparently the jump to next-generation consoles has done the series some good.

"Hitting this milestone reinforces the high review scores and widespread recognition Final Fantasy X-2 has received for its storyline, gameplay and graphics," gushed Jun Iwasaki, president, CEO and all-around good guy at Square Enix U.S.A. "It also shows that fans of Final Fantasy X were waiting to continue the journey in this sequel. We are pleased with the wonderful response that Final Fantasy X-2 has received from the public and at retail."

Considering the first female-lead Final Fantasy game launched just a hair over three months ago, the million sales mark is quite impressive, and hammers home the fact that gamers are all for seeing formerly soft-spoken, demure female characters in hotpants, bordered on either side by a bubblingly effervescent cutie and highly-quaffed leatherclad tough girl. Well, I guess you learn something new every day...
