Final Fantasy XI Nabs A VGA

Square Enix's teeny little MMORPG rocks Spike TV's first annual awards show.

Not that we have any huge problem with it, but there seems to be quite a bit of interest in doing a big time video game awards show these days. Between G4TV's Glow Awards a while back and Spike TV's (formerly the humble TNN) Video Game Awards, awards are being doled out like crazy.

Don't let that lessen the impact of Square Enix taking the "Best Online Game" category, though; the game definitely deserves it. Not only is the game going to be the first one to take full advantage of the HDD add-on for the PS2 when it launches in March of 2004, but it's already up and running on the PC, and both versions of the game work together seamlessly, creating the first major cross-platform massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

The game was actually nominated for two awards (the other being "Best Fantasy Game") at the VGA's, which will air tomorrow night (12.4.03), at 9PM ET/PT on Spike TV. The awards show, hosted by David Spade, ditches the celebrity guests and speeches and sticks to doling out awards during the show, and inserting random game-related bits throughout the program to mix things up. The Vegas-based awards show is similar to G4's LA-based Glow awards, but seems a bit higher-budget.

For the full list of nominees before the show starts tomorrow, click here for the official VGA web site. All the results were determined by online votes in each of the awards show's 16 categories. We'll be sure to post the results of the show tomorrow for those that don't carry Spike on their local cable lineups.
