Final Fantasy X Gets 2001 Release

MGS2 has come and gone, and now arguably the most anticipated PS2 release has officially been given the pre-2002 green light.

Rumored for a couple days now, Square finally announced they will officially ship Final Fantasy X to US stores before the end of the year. Originally, the game was to be released sometime in February, 2002, then January, but has now been moved up in time for New Years.

The game falls just one day short of making the Christmas cut, but with all the new PS2s that are sure to be given out as presents this year, all the money stuffed in those cards can be put to good use the next day, a shopping day that ranks just behind the day after Thanksgiving (the so-called "Black Friday") as the busiest retail sales day of the year.

"We are very excited to rollout FINAL FANTASY X before the end of the year. All efforts were put into bringing the title out earlier than expected. We hope this long-awaited title will be played by many gamers over the holiday season," said Square EA president Jun Iwasaki. "As with FINAL FANTASY VII for the original PlayStation, as the first FINAL FANTASY game released for the PlayStation 2, we hope that this title will set new standards in the role-playing game genre."

To commemorate the release, Square will throw one of their familiar demo days here in San Francisco to show off the game early to lucky gamers that can make it to the PlayStation store in the Metreon on December 15th. The usual prize goodies and awesome Square way of saying "thank you" to the fans should keep anyone remotely interested in the series quite happy. We'll be at the Metreon to cover the event in all its glory.
