Squaresoft President Hisashi Suzuki recently gave an interview where he confirmed that his company is set to ship more than 2,000,000 copies of Final Fantasy X when it is released in Japan on July 19. Even though the most optimistic outlook is that all copies will sell out in the standard two-day time period games are given for a "launch-day record", Square is betting dollars to yen that at least 75% of those units shipped will sell through on launch day, Square's newest epic RPG would instantly become the best-selling PlayStation 2 title to date, easily knocking Gran Turismo 3 A-spec off it's first day million-seller perch. When asked about his hopes for the game's overall sales, Suzuki indicated that Square is looking forward to selling 4,000,000 units in Japan over the title's lifetime and 10,000,000 units worldwide.
Square's only competition could be the respective U.S. releases of Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec or Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty as far the the first day two-million-seller champion.
More on this as information becomes available.
