Following off the heels of Conexant Systems announcement of utilizing their technology for future PlayStation2 narrowband modems, it now seems that Japanese owners of the next generation console may attain online gaming sooner than ever.
According to a recent report in the Japanese-based publication; The Nihon Keizei Shimbun, officials for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) have gone on record by stating that Japanese gamers may be able to play online as early as this Spring. While Sony's very own broadband online network is still in the works, several publishers have decided to go ahead with their online plans and utilize the narrowband technology being offered by the US-based Conexant Systems.
Eight developers including Square Co., are reported to have been involved in such plans. Currently Square is working on their online version of Final Fantasy X, to be released by next year. Enix is also working on a web-enabled version of Dragon Quest for the next generation console.
We will have more information on these recent developments as they become available.
