Eragon Takes Flight

Because if there's one thing we geeks can't get enough of, it's living out our fantasies of riding around on dragons.

If the name Eragon doesn't ring a bell, you're probably not all that into fantasy novels, and certainly not familiar with the book and its star of the same name. It's cool, we all just scratched out heads when we heard the title too, but apparently Christopher Paolini's novel is something of a hot ticket these days -- or at least 20th Century Fox seems to think so. They've optioned the rights to the book and are planning to release a big screen adaptation come Christmas time.

The movie, featuring John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich, naturally), Jeremy Irons (Kingdom of Heaven, Dungeons & Dragons), Robert Carlyle (The Beach, Trainspotting, Die Another Day), Djimon Hounsou (Amistad, Gladiator) and newcomer Edward Speelers, apparently attractive enough for Vivendi Universal Games to plop down cash for it. The result will be a console and portable version of the game on nearly every conceivable current-gen platform, not the least of which will be our very own PS2 and PSP.
“Christopher Paolini’s amazing fantasy worlds, characters and adventures portrayed in Eragon offer fans of the genre an opportunity to step into Eragon’s world and live out the dragon rider legacy,” geeked Bruce Hack, CEO of VU Games. “Eragon is sure to be one of the most anticipated movies of 2006 and we are excited to bring this rich story to gamers worldwide.”
“VU Games has done a wonderful job adapting many of our top films to the interactive format. Eragon has proven to be the best example to date of what can happen when true collaboration comes to fruition," chipped in Fox Executive VP of Licensing & Marchandising Elie Dekel. "Movie-goers are going to be hugely impressed with the film, and gamers will be blown away by this state-of-the-art video game."

The PS2 version will center around Eragon himself, a boy who befriends a dragon and goes on to do dragony riding-type things while pulling off combo attacks and a little dragon-assisted air combat. Okay, so technically we have no idea what the game's actually going to be right, other than hoping that it'll pull from the good parts of Drakan without... well, being Drakan, we suppose.

The PSP version actually centers around Saphira, the dragon, itself, and is purely centered around aerial combat. The single-player portable experience tells Saphira's side of the story, while the four-player wireless multiplayer battles let you fly around in seven arenas and tussle in a dozen different game modes.

We'll have more once we've had a chance to go hands-on at E3.
