Life is Viewtiful

An honored classic is ported over to the system of our lord, while a new masterpiece is being forged behind the scenes
Published: April 28, 2004
In the oft-overlooked subculture of 2-D video game aficionados, last year was a time of reckoning. Viewtiful Joe arrived on the Gamecube and settled the nerves of countless old-school devotees. Questions like; "Are 2-D games a dead art?" "Does Nintendo have any surprises left?" and "Is there really a point to living anyway?" were still up in the air prior to the release of Viewtiful Joe. Such question that modern science and philosophy came up short in answering, Capcom responded to vehemently. Viewtiful Joe proved to be, not only an evolution of the 2-D genre, but an evolution of video games as a whole. Only the riotously original cast of characters and impeccable gameplay execution matched the game's bizarrely brilliant graphical flavor. Shown praise the world over for it's innovative style and charming demeanor, it seemed like another masterpiece of gaming history would fall victim to lack of widespread appeal due to an unpopular format (not to knock the 'cube, I cherish my lil' love box).

But it seems that Sony and Capcom have some other ideas in mind. Rather than falling into the obscurity of video game mythos, Capcom has announced plans to port the now classic title to the 'cube's big, black older brother. This fall, expect to see Viewtiful Joe with a big pretty Playstation 2 logo above its name. Not only that, but expect to see Viewtiful Joe 2 this winter. Starting from the get go with a co-op mode featuring Joe's girlfriend from the first game, Silvia as a sidekick with abilities unique to her character. Also expect to see a few other surprises, like new VFX powers, an enhanced graphics engine and some Capcom favorites making cameo appearances (like the recently spotted Dante from Devil May Cry).

Expect news about this and other upcoming Capcom hits from E3 in less than two weeks from now. Keep it here.
