Watercraft Racing Splashes Down On The PS2

Wave Race isn't the only game in town, kiddies. The folks that brought you the deliciously fun ATV Offroad Fury are at it again.

The guys at Rainbow Studios know their stuff. ATV Offroad Fury didn't just raise the bar for good ATV racing games, it obliterated it. Before they were crafting fantastic 4-wheeled racing, they were doing it with 2 for Microsoft with Motocross Madness. Needless to say, the development house has a attractive track record, and they're taking that fun and experience to new environments, and giving Wave Race a little much-needed competition.

Infogrames will be tackling all the publishing duties for the upcoming game, making this the second free-roamer/racer for the company comping out for the PS2. Called Splashdown, the game will couple Rainbow's knack for dead-on physics and great graphics with the all-powerful SEA-DOO license. The developers promise custom tuned physics that are true the real-life hadling of the real watercraft, and something they've dubbed "hydrodynamic physics," which will render some incredible looking water effects like wakes, turbulence, and the all-important rolling waves. Of course there will be plenty of tricks to pull -- and subsequent wipeouts if you can't get them off in time.

18 total venues like Hawaii; Lake Havasu, Arizona; Nice, France; and the gradaddy of all dream raceways, Venice, Italy will let you take your pick of racing, or just a little putting around and exploring.

If Rainbow Studios can deliver (and with a history that speaks for itself, it'll be surprising if they can't), we should see some amazingly fun aquatic competition. Well get the chance to find out this fall.
