Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is set for release in the second quarter of 2010, and we have some screenshots showing off its unique look. Don't think that we put up images with unsightly compression: what you're seeing is true to how the game appears in motion. The crazy people at IO Interactive cooked up a set of post-processing effects that replicate the performance of a low-quality digital camera.

The aim here is to give the game the look of a low-fi documentary, which is sort of a roundabout method of making the action seem more real by further separating the viewer from it. The more grainy and jumpy a recording is, the more our conditioning tells us that it's authentic, which is a phenomenon routinely exploited in film.

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men was released in 2007 and had the player taking the role of Kane, a hard-boiled criminal type, with the option of having a buddy control the unhinged psychopath, Lynch. This time around, Lynch is the main character, though he appears to have his disorder somewhat under control. The cooperative mode returns, in addition to adversarial multiplayer. Dead Men featured a squad control mechanic (similar to IO's Freedom Fighters), which will not be appearing in Dog Days.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days promises to offer a gritty crime drama, with the titular malfeasors making a mess of Shanghai. Their misadventures are sure to include the requisite heists and jobs gone wrong, likely with a betrayal or two to keep things moving.
