Eagle Eye Converts Keyboard into PS3 Controller

Mass-Market Appeal? Doubtful...

We live in a strange age; an age where we treat genuinely mindblowing technology with casual abandon. We have become so used to the marvels which surround us that it takes something thoroughly confusing to remind us of our surroundings. This is what happened with me when I read the press release for the new "EAGLE-EYE CONVERTER" for the PS3. This particular piece of wizardry is an adaptor which lets you use a keyboard and mouse for first person shooter games on the PS3. It also offers "Optional Turbo Mode". I have to confess to being slightly confused by this. The last time I used 'turbo' on a console was when the slo-mo function paused the game rapidly. On the Megadrive . I thought it was a useless function then (why would I want Sonic to keep jumping?) and, true to form, I think it's useless now.

I know that some people will be willing to sacrifice their first born (or fifty dollars) for something like this:

· Customized Key Mapping Feature Transfers Command Data to Keyboard and Mouse
· Same Data Transfer Rate as Original PS3 Controller for Greater Dexterity
· Optional Turbo Mode for R1, R2, L1, L2 and the 4 Primary Action Buttons
· Supports 2 USB Ports for Standard HID Keyboard and Mouse
· Provides Turbo Function for Standard PS3 Controller when Not Using Keyboard/Mouse

Yet I don't quite grasp the appeal. I like sitting on my sofa with a control pad, feet on the table in front of me. My recent foray intoTF 2 has reminded me of the strains involved in sitting hunched over a keyboard and mouse; while the experience may be quicker and more accurate, it simply isn't as relaxing.

That moaning aside, this also raises questions of fairness in online games. If this works as well as promised, it will be an immediate boost to those online players who have shelled out for one. This could cause a nasty fracture in theuserbase. We shall see.

The unit itself will be on display from 7th - 10th January at the CES and you can visit the manufacturer's site here!
