Opticians everywhere celebrate!

Sure you MIGHT be old enough to remember when Rad Racer for the NES hit, and Square was leading the innovation by providing 3D glasses with the game, which, if you played it, were really underwhelming. Maybe you can remember that time when you went to the arcade and they had that crazy looking machine that looked like a glass dome in a cardboard box? If you know I'm talking about Time Traveller, you are really old! But then you also remember that it was the first "holographic" game and featured 3D actors in front of virtually no backgrounds, and the game play was from the "Dragon's Lair" school of basically being a rhythm game without any music. It sucked. Since then, 3D gaming hasn't really gone too far. Sure, PC's have those headache inducing steroscopic goggles you can wear, but clearly THAT isn't catching on.

Well, RealView Innovations has announced their new V-Screen for PSP, hitting retail sometime in Q4 this year. What is it? Well, it is simply an optical device that fits snugly over your existing PSP screen, and enhances the percieved 2D depth of the PSP screen, creating the appearance of a 3D image. The impressive part of this technology is that it doesn't rely on software or hardware, but rather it works entirely with optics. No word yet whether this works well with existing games or if it will need software written specifically for it. Also no word on whether or not it will induce migraine headaches a la the virtual boy fiasco. Check back later for more news!
