Rock Band goes portable…

…with a ton of great features promising to make it worth the trip!

Bringing Rock Band to a portable console sounds like a terribly complicated and boring experience doesn’t it? Well, we have to admit that the Guitar Hero franchise actually did quite a good job with Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS a while back. But we are confident that what MTV Games and Harmonix (in partnership with Backbone Entertainment) are going to deliver on June 9th with Rock Band Unplugged is going to be even cooler. Wait, uh…isn’t this the very same day Prototype AND inFamous are bound to hit stores in a gigantic faceoff deathmatch?! Yeah dood, it is, but the sheer amount of genius rock madness that Harmonix and Backbone are promising here makes us confident that this game won’t be among the casualties of that giant battle’s fallout. Luckily we have a very close and super reliable source on the inside saying that this game will deliver. The source that shall remain unnamed at this point due to legal complications has had the chance to play the poop out of the game a couple of weeks ago.

Rock Band Unplugged is designed for the purpose of single-handedly letting you play the instruments of the entire band with the help of the D-Pad’s left and down and the circle and X buttons. You play one instrument at a time and then switch between the different tracks to ultimately make the song play in its entirety. As you see, there is no external peripheral needed in order to play this game. In a way it goes back to the good old Frequency and Amplitude days.

Rock Band Unplugged reinvents band gameplay while staying true to the authentic feel of the Rock Band console games,” beamed Bob Picunko, Senior Vice President of Electronic Games for MTV Games. “Harmonix delivers innovation with every game they develop and we are excited to continue our long-list of industry firsts with the Rock Band in-game wireless music store on the PSP system.” Wait a minute… a Rock Band in-game wireless music store? That is awesome isn’t it? Basically it means you can expect most of the songs from its bigger brother’s catalogue to hit your PSP within time. At this point we only know for sure that there will be 40 master-recordings included on the UMD nine of which are brand new exclusives (exclusive for a short amount of time though). Speculating is fun though and we therefore predict it being very likely that the PSP store will very quickly be just as flooded with great bands (and also not so great ones) like it went down with the original Rock Band and the PSN and XBL stores. Who knows, they might have a ton of stuff on there on day one.

Here’s the list of the 9 (exclusive) tracks:

3 Doors Down - "Kryptonite"
AFI - "Miss Murder"
Alice in Chains - "Would?"
Audioslave - "Gasoline"
Black Tide - "Show Me the Way"
Blink 182 - "What's My Age Again"
Freezepop - "Less Talk More Rokk"
Jackson 5 - "ABC"
Tenacious D - "Rock Your Socks"

Also on June 9th those of you interested in getting a piano black PSP can simply buy the limited edition entertainment pack which comes bundled with the game, a code to download School Of Rock starring Jack Black from the PS Store and a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo. The pack retails at $199.99 (MSRP) in North America.
