Apogee Software, the company that pioneered the shareware game revolution in 1987; originally released Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, and Wolfenstein 3-D; and became a proponent of online distribution, is making a comeback this E3, with the Duke himself along for the ride. There's also 30-plus other legacy releases that they plan to help see the light of day.

"This marks a new beginning for a famous publisher with a history of market-making innovation," said Terry Nagy, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Apogee. "I can't think of a better character than Duke or a better franchise than the Trilogy to usher in a new era for Apogee.

Duke Nukem will hit the handheld market in the form of three all new missions called the Duke Nukem Trilogy. Under an exclusive license agreement with 3D Realms and MachineWorks Northwest LLC, the trilogy will feature three episodes: Critical Mass, Chain Reaction, and Proving Grounds.

"It's funny how what's old is new again in this industry," remarked Apogee co-founder, Scott Miller. "Many of the things Apogee pioneered are back in style, so it only makes sense to bring back Apogee and its properties with a visionary team that will once again create innovation for gamers around the world."
If Apogee's appearance can somehow push the new Duke Nukem game to market, good times will be had all around. Otherwise, it's just good to see an old star burn bright again!
