Space Invaders to Invade PAL Regions
A classic gets a facelift.

Square Enix Ltd. announced today that Space Invaders Extreme for the PlayStation Portable would be hitting PAL regions on July 4th, 2008. They're also releasing Arkanoid for Nintendo DS.
It's been 30 years since the original Space Invaders was released in arcades around the world and a lot has changed since then. Where could anyone hope to take the franchise in this day and age of sandbox worlds and high resolution graphics?
Space Invaders Extreme takes some of the same gameplay elements from the original, like the aliens and ship you pilot, and mixes them with trippy FMV backgrounds, crazy weapons, and audio cues that make the game as addictive as the recent release of Patapon, with an audio track provided by musicians and DJ's such as Sugiurumn, Wall Five, DJ Aki, Atom & Masaki Sakamoto, and Altz. Players can even jump into some competitive multiplayer with ad hoc mode.
“Both ARKANOID and SPACE INVADERS transcend different generations and gaming abilities,” John Yamamoto, President and Chief Executive Officer of Square Enix Ltd. said of the franchises. “They are as loved for the gameplay experience as they are for their iconic status. With the launch of SPACE INVADERS EXTREME and ARKANOID DS we can offer existing fans the chance to enjoy the next level of gameplay, while offering a new audience the chance to experience these classics in a contemporary way.”
One way to revitalize the classics is to give them some new flavor and it seems that's what's been doing with Space Invaders Extreme. The addictive nature will pull you in all over again. Luckily, you won't need quarters.
