Soon, India will be the capital of the gaming world. Or maybe not, but Ubisoft is opening up studios there regardless.

Today, the company announced the conclusion of an agreement with Gameloft to acquire its video game studios in Pune, India. The studios, which were established near the tail end of 2006, sport some 120 developers and testers that focus on handheld products. Ubisoft hopes to turn the studio into a 200 strong development house in twelve months, with a team of 500 in the coming years.

But why India? Because engineers graduate from Pune University at such a rate, that development houses would be suffer if they didn't try to snatch up at least a fair bit of the 80,000 yearly graduates.

"Following on the recent announcement of our new Singapore studio, this acquisition will reinforce Ubisoft’s presence in Asia and the southeast region in particular. India has a promising future in the videogame industry and this is an opportunity for us to establish ourselves in the country," stated Christine Burgess-Quémard, executive director, worldwide studios at Ubisoft.

Ubisoft and Gameloft expect to close the deal in the first quarter of the 2008-2009 fiscal year.
