Gaming Enters the Record Books
Guinness Books and the gaming industry get together for some fun.

When I was a kid, I always fantasized about being in the Guinness Book of World Records, but there wasn't anything I was particularly good at besides video gaming. Unfortunately, gaming wasn't considered adult entertainment, so there was virtually no chance of me ever getting into the record books that way. Well, twenty years later, that's all changed.
Guinness World Records now has a new edition affectionately called Guinness World Records: Gamers Edition 2008. To commemorate this event, three record-breaking events were held to name new records for some of the world's most popular games: Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Major League Baseball 2K8. There was also an assembly of 80 costumed fans in the UK in the hopes of scoring “Largest Meeting of Costumed Characters.” I believe they managed to win that one.
For Guitar Hero III, Chris Chike set the mark for “Highest Score for a Single Song” with 880,920 points (97% completion on Expert level) for “Through the Fire and Flames” by DragonForce. If you've seen the game on expert, then you know how insanely hard this song is.
Wylan McEvoy, a 12 year-old, claimed records for “Most Home Runs in a 10-Out Home Run Derby” and “Most Consecutive Homeruns Without An Out” on MLB 2k8, with 51 and 18 respectively.
"These three events are all testaments to the strong gaming spirit that inspired us to create a gaming annual in the first place," said Keith Pullin, editor of the Gamers Edition. The achievements of Chris, Wylan and all of the great fans in the UK are perfect examples of what Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition will represent in the future."
Of course it goes without saying that Guinness is always taking submissions. They've even set up a new website at http://gamers.guinnessworldrecords.com to help would-be record breakers along.
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm all for anything that pushes the gaming industry into the mainstream just that much more. One small step for man, one giant step for the gaming industry.
