Later this month, Sony will release software update version 2.20. This is the update that will add BD-LIVE, or Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 to the system. Why is that important? Because now users will get downloadable video content, ringtones, games, and more, solidifying Blu-ray's position in the marketplace. The update will also enable photo and music playlists that can be copied over to the PSP.

So what about all those features? What's in it for you? Well, the downloadable content can include anything from bonus scenes to trailers, subtitles, or shorts. It's like having more extras than what's included on the disc. There are also interactive movie-based games that let players play with anyone in the world.

Other new features to be featured in Profile 2.0 are Resume Play, which lets the PS3 start playing a BD or DVD video from the point it was stopped, even if it the disc is removed, Audio Output Device, which is a new Remote Play setting that let's the PSP act as a remote control for users' music, and the ability to play DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB.

All of this comes at a price, however. To access the features, users will need an internet connection and at least 1GB of local storage. Not everything will work out of the box either, as movies have to come with BD-LIVE to take full advantage of the service and it'll be another month before those start hitting the retail shelves.

If anything, Sony is working hard to get Blu-ray into your living room. Blu truly is the future.
