ESA Foundation Has Scholarships Up for Grabs
The only catch? You have to want to make video games for a living. Oh, and be female or a minority.

ESA is serious about getting some diversity into an industry that is mostly male oriented. That's why they are giving females and minority students the chance to apply for one of 15 $3,000 scholarships, totaling $45,000 all together, if the applicant is interested in pursuing a career in video game development. The full-time undergrads have until May 15th, 2008 to apply online.
“Positions in our industry are high-paying jobs with a remarkable potential to inspire and entertain millions of Americans. We hope these scholarships will encourage students to pursue careers in this growing and lucrative field,” Michael Gallagher, president and CEO of the ESA, which represents U.S. computer and game publishers, said about the program. “We offer this program to help create our industry’s next generation who will boost the industry’s creative capital with new and unique approaches.”
And, honestly, the industry is in desperate need of some new creative capital. There's way too many bald space marines, androgynous role-playing characters, and Roman gladiators in this day and age. If this scholarship helps invigorate those who normally wouldn't enter the field, or those who would've languished in obscurity, so be it.
The scholarship is far reaching, covering fields such as graphic design, computer science, animation, programming, and software engineering. They'll be offered every year for full-time study at any accredited four-year college or university.
If you're a female or minority, jump on this. Not only will you be breaking into an industry that, despite stellar year over year sales, is stagnating in the creativity department, you will also be one of a few (and one day, many) that change the industry for the better.
