PlayStation Network Explodes with Novastrike

Worried that PlayStation Network won't get quality games like Microsoft's Xbox Marketplace? Worry no more.

Top down shooters have been done the world over. Even the Dreamcast, which has been dead for almost a decade now, still gets releases now and again from independent companies that either want to throw money down the drain or still fly the “Dreamcast 2” flag in Sega's honor. But that's neither here nor there. What's important is that top down shooters are still a viable genre, regardless of how antiquated the concept may seem. In fact, one could say they are having a bit of a comeback these days. There's no better place for that comeback than the PlayStation Network.

Tiki Games, which is one of those independent developers I was talking about earlier, has decided that top down shooters is where they want to place their money, specifically in their PlayStation Network title Novastrike. Free roaming flight, multiple weapon variations, and a sci-fi laced story about a world conquering species known as the Draelus propel players through the action while completing multiple objectives in a plethora of environments. Even allied units join the battle, making it feel more like a war and less like a single man who has a death wish. Sounds like the formula for a potential winner to me, baring that the price isn't outrageous.

"Tiki Games is committed to putting out high-quality titles that bring something new to the table," Kevin McCann, president and creative director of Tiki Games said about the project. "NOVASTRIKE takes its roots from the toughest shoot-'em-ups, and brings that gameplay into a free-roaming, unpredictable space -- and when players think they've conquered that, our continued support for the game will keep them on their toes with all-new game content."

Just the free roaming aspect alone is exciting, since most top down shooters are vertical scrollers that feel a bit archaic.

Tiki Games is hoping to bring this to the PS Network early this year, but there's not a definite date. Since their feature set includes DualShock 3 support, seven stages with objective-based goals, and they plan to continue offering new content for Novastrike throughout all of 2008, I'd pin this one as a May release, but there's no telling. Whatever ends up happening, top down shooter fans will flock to the title. Tiki Games might even find itself swimming in money.
