Codemaster's Damnation

Another shooter coming to next-gen systems, this time “vertical”.

Codemasters, along with Blue Omega Entertainment, announced today that they were bringing Damnation, a new gaming intellectual property, to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC later this year.

In hopes of differentiating themselves from every other first-third-person action-shooter game on the market, Codemasters is billing this game as “a shooter gone vertical,” though there's no telling what that actually means. The game is said to feature huge, sprawling urban wastelands, frantic combat, and daredevil vehicular stunts. Whether all of that translates into a fun game is anyone's guess.

Visually, the game looks like another Gears of War clone, but almost every next-gen game does these days, so that's not really a shot against it. Though the screenshots suggest this game is a third person over-the-shoulder action game, the lack of UI make them seem more like product shots and less like actual gameplay screens. Regardless, players will be able to choose their own paths through the levels, which are said to be three hours in length. Apparently Codemasters hasn't heard about the death of epic gaming.

There'll also be plenty of multiplayer options that take advantage of the game's massive levels. Any other information, however, isn't forthcoming.

Since the game is some nine months away, Codemasters and Blue Omega have time to get the house in order. Whether that means they'll make it into a fun, playable game is anyone's guess, but one can hope.
