Ask those in the know to name off a handful of development hotspots, and you'll probably get the same couple answers; Austin, LA, Montreal, Seattle, the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago... and Vancouver. There's just something about the Seattle's neighbor to the north that blends Pacific Northwest beauty with Candian awesomeness that seems to bring out the best in people -- particularly artists and programmers, two things that are key for the development of new games.

Experience doesn't hurt either, which is likely why SEGA decided to ink a deal with the newly-formed Deep Fried Entertainment to make a new PSP game. While DFE is a new studio operating out of Vancouver, the people that are heading things up have dabbled in racing, role-playing, action, and even football (Need for Speed Underground 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate, MDK2 and NFL GameDay[/], specifically).

"SEGA understands the handheld market like few other publishers," posits Deep Fried Entertainment COO Brenda Bailey. "This understanding of the market, coupled with SEGA's deep respect for creativity and innovation, makes the company an ideal partner for our team."

"Deep Fried Entertainment brings a unique blend of talent and expertise to the table," reciprocated Simon Jeffery, himself a COO and President of SEGA of America. "This agreement reinforces our commitment to establish strategic partnerships with top development talent in North America."

Like the last few SEGA announcements, exactly what the game [i]is
hasn't been revealed yet; no title, no gameplay details, no nuthin', but the good news (at least for the Deep Fried folks) is that whatever the game may be, it's found a publisher. Unlike, say, the Planet Moon deal, however, it doesn't appear that SEGA is tasking DFE with remaking a classic franchise, they're just interested in publishing whatever it is that they've come up with.

As soon as we have more details, particularly how the deal works out for DFE and the IP they're creating, we'll be sure to update you. Stay tuned!
