PSP Launch Specifics Revealed

Launch date, titles and price revealed, with a special American Bonus
Published: February 3, 2005
Mark your calendars for March 23. That’s the night you’re going to have to drive to your local game store to camp out on the curb in hopes of pinching a PSP for its release the next day on March 24.

$249.99 -- March 24 – 24 Launch titles.

While that price may seem somewhat higher than speculation may have led some to expect, the ride, it seems, is gong to be well worth the admission. Included in the North American release will be: 32 MB Memory Stick Duo, headphones with remote control, battery pack, AC adaptor, soft case and cleaning cloth, movie/music/game video sampler UMD disc including multiple non-interactive game demos, and, the big gift, for the first one million PSP Value Packs shipped, a special UMD video release of the feature film Spider-Man 2 from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"PSP will evolve and elevate portable entertainment, giving users the freedom to play full 3D games, watch movies, listen to music and connect wirelessly on their terms, their time and their place," remarked Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive officer, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. "More than ever, today's consumer demands access to entertainment outside the home without compromising quality. With more than 100 PSP game titles currently in development worldwide, and the ability to download and listen to digital music and view feature films with breathtaking screen quality, PSP lets users control their entertainment options, all in one package."

Sony has plans to ship one million PSP units to North America by March 30. This number is a great deal higher than most analysts were predicting. Let’s hope they don’t sacrifice quality control issues in the process.

Sony, in typical chest-beating style, trumped out the facts in grand fashion, the biggest among them: the PSP will enjoy the single largest launch lineup in history. Ever. 24 titles are to be released with or prior to the system’s launch on March 24. The titles are as follows:

"Combined with a strong first party lineup, the portable entertainment space will be catapulted to new heights as we engage in the single biggest consumer launch of the year."

These 24 will be in addition to the two you can collect straight from the box packaged with the demo and Spider-Man 2 movie, collect all 26 UMD’s!

As Parappa once put it: “I Gotta Believe!”

Now, you too must believe. Believe we will be covering the stink out of this launch with (god willing) coast-to-coast coverage of the system as the big day, March 24 draws closer. Keep it here.
