Eight finalists remain in 2K Sports' Major League Baseball 2K12's $1 Million Perfect Game Challenge. These eight will go head-to-head in a live, single-elimination tournament at the MLB Fan Cave on May 9-10. The winner gets to join the Perfect Club and be the envy of baseball video game players everywhere.
Spike TV will air a half-hour special covering the final at 11:30 PM ET on May 24. It will be hosted by Geoff Keighley of GTTV and feature a special appearance by MLB Network's Harold Reynolds. Oh, and apparently some lady named Kate Upton will be there, maybe you've heard of her. Somehow I doubt she's related to Justin and Bossman Junior.
The special will include exclusive interviews with the finalists as they reflect on their performances. It'll be cool to see what these guys have to say given that they were the chosen few out of 940,000 attempts and 900 perfect games.
“We wanted to make this year’s Perfect Game Challenge more exciting, more challenging and more engaging with a greater number of our fans, and we’ve been thrilled with the overwhelming level of participation,” said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. “Eight different competitors from across America will battle their nerves and each other in order to win the $1 million; it’s going to be intense.”
The final eight who were chosen by a dynamic leaderboard to find the "most perfect" games thrown. 2K Sports used an algorithm to rank individual perfect games based on degree of difficulty (such as the opposing team’s offensive prowess and selected pitcher’s skill) and degree of perfection (number of strikeouts, pitching efficiency).
Here is a list of the finalists:
- Charles Bates of Conway, Arkansas. He went with Danny Duffy against the Detroit Tigers and had the highest score at 826.
- Walter Novack of Hudson, New York. He went with Hector Noesi against the Detroit Tigers and scored an 825.
- Christopher Gilmore of Melbourne, Florida. He went with Kyle Drabek against the Boston Red Sox and also scored an 825.
- Robert Romanowski of Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey. He also went with Hector Noesi against the Detroit Tigers and scored an 821.
- Matthew Lein of Athens, Georgia. He went with Brian Matusz against the Toronto Blue Jays and scored an 821 of his own.
- Kyle Cibrario of Libertyville, Illinois. He also went with Kyle Drabek against the Boston Red Sox and scored an 819.

- Sean Jaquith of San Jose, California rounds out the list. He also went with Hector Noesi against the Detroit Tigers and scored an 814.
So there you have it. Take note, next year's participants: pick on the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox.
